I’m glad we undermluntain this one at all, even late in the apparent lifespan of 4E, and it is a very good book.

None of us had ever played tabletop roleplaying games before, but the group consensus was that we should play Vampire, since all goth stuff was cool at the time.

Undermountaln leaves a lot of room for DMs to create on the fly, and to assist with that, it even includes random generation tables for both rooms and encounters! The book deals with this in a simple yet elegant way.

The map for the Yawning Portal is amazing. The adventure plots and NPCs are very well done and worth lifting and using in other games even if you don’t end up using them in Undermountain. Most of them lack any maps or monster stats, instead referring the DM to the poster map, or to the Monster Vault respectively.

Izslozne rated it liked it Jun 08, Given the size of the first level alone which not covered by this sourcebook, there is plenty of places to create additional undermointain and adventures within the Undermountain.
There are notes on the various ways to enter the dungeon and notes on some NPC’s and why they might ask or hire the party to do so.

As I mentioned, my group never wanted to play DnD. On the reverse and on another 2-sided poster map are really nicely done battlemap tile poster images for several of the more interesting rooms and for the famous Yawning Portal tavern. I let go, and learned to just embrace it for what it is. It comes with a fantastic poster map that has the entire floor map of the 1st level on one side and the interior of the Yawning Portal Inn on the other as well as another poster map with a couple of decent battle map locations on either side.
The book goes even further than that, and encourages you to improvise a lot of it.
